Chapter 14 - The Man Without the Wedding

The canceled wedding left Charles with an unexpected problem.

People treated him like a hero.

He hated it.

Strangers sent messages praising him for "choosing his mother."

Talk shows wanted interviews.

One company offered him a campaign about family values.

"Why?" Mason asked one afternoon.

"Because I didn't plan some brave moral stand. I got angry and ended my wedding."

"Still the right call."

"Maybe. But I don't get to turn one good boundary into sainthood."

Eleanor overheard and smiled.

Isabella moved out of her parents' Nashville home and rented a small apartment.

She took a leave from the Whitmore Foundation before resigning completely.

For the first time since college, she had no family job waiting.

She applied to nonprofit communications positions and was rejected twice because of the scandal.

The third organization interviewed her anyway.

They asked about the church video.

She answered without excuses.

She did not get that job either.

Growth did not guarantee reward.

Then St. Matthew's asked if she would help with a volunteer donor database project under supervision.

Months later, Charles saw her there while visiting a pediatric surgeon with Eleanor.

Isabella sat at a folding table entering addresses into a spreadsheet.

Eleanor noticed Charles looking.

"Don't romanticize basic decency."

"You have a sentence for everything."

"Years of practice."

At the hospital board meeting, Samuel announced the project would be renamed.

The board wanted to call it the Eleanor Bennett Children's Wing.

"Absolutely not."

"You made it possible."

"So did nurses. Contractors. Other donors. Taxpayers. Families. Put all those names on the wall if you want."

They settled on:

THE COMMUNITY CHILDREN'S CENTER.

Then Rachel entered with an update.

Authorities had filed financial charges against Victor connected to false records and restricted funds.

But one part was immediate.

A court froze Blue Heron and the company holding Rose Creek's north acreage.

Charles looked at his mother.

"You might get the land back."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

May you like

Everyone stared.

"If it comes back," she said, "I want something else done with it."
