Chapter 14 - Twelve Years

The old ledger changed the case overnight.
Payments to doctors. Payments to security contractors. Payments to shell companies connected to Evelyn's foundation.
Brooks reopened Adrian's father's death.
Marcus Vale asked for a deal before breakfast.
"Evelyn has been doing this for decades," he said. "She creates dependency, then crisis, then control."
He admitted forging medical paperwork after Adrian's father died. He also admitted helping Evelyn bury evidence that suggested poisoning.
Adrian listened without moving.
"What did she use?"
Vale looked down. "Digitalis. Small doses over time."
Maya watched Adrian absorb the idea that his father's death had been staged long before anyone tried to stage Caleb's.
"Why?" Adrian asked.
"Your father wanted to divide the company among employees and charities. Evelyn believed the Mercer name should remain concentrated."
"So she killed him for control."
Vale said nothing.
That silence was enough.
The prosecutor offered Vale limited consideration for full testimony.
But one problem remained.
Celeste's lawyers claimed she had acted under duress and had never intended Caleb to die.
Maya was furious.
"She pushed a baby into a pool."
Brooks nodded. "Intent will be argued. Evidence decides what sticks."
Then forensic technicians recovered deleted messages from Celeste's phone.
One thread was between Celeste and Evelyn.
Evelyn: MAKE SURE THE MAID IS CLOSE.
Celeste: WHAT IF SHE DOESN'T REACH HIM?
Evelyn: THEN WE ADJUST THE STORY.
Celeste: AND IF THE BABY DIES?
Evelyn's reply came twelve seconds later.
THEN ADRIAN WILL BE EASIER TO CONTROL.
Maya read it twice.
May you like
Adrian read it once.
Then he walked out of the room without saying a word.
