Chapter 18 - The Last Performance

Evelyn survived.

The "poison" turned out to be a harmless cleaning concentrate diluted in water.

She had staged the collapse to force a hospital transfer.

During transport, a hired driver tried to block the police ambulance.

Brooks arrested him within minutes.

"Even now," Maya said, "she's still trying to control the scene."

Adrian nodded. "It's all she knows."

At the hospital, Evelyn asked to see her son.

Brooks allowed it with two officers present.

Evelyn looked smaller in the bed, but her eyes were unchanged.

"You think that maid saved you," she said.

"She saved Caleb."

"And destroyed this family."

Adrian leaned closer. "No. She showed me what this family had become."

Evelyn's mouth twisted.

"Your father said the same thing before he died."

Brooks, listening from the doorway, caught every word.

Adrian went still.

"What did you say?"

Evelyn realized too late.

The room became silent.

Brooks stepped forward. "Would you like to repeat that?"

Evelyn smiled.

"I said nothing."

But Adrian had heard enough.

Three months later, the grand jury returned indictments against Evelyn, Vale, and Celeste.

Celeste refused a plea deal.

She wanted trial.

Her defense strategy was simple: blame Evelyn for everything and claim Maya had exaggerated what she saw.

Then Celeste's lawyer made a request that shocked everyone.

They wanted Maya on the stand first.
