Chapter 19 - The Witness

Maya walked into court wearing a navy dress borrowed from Claire and the same simple silver cross she wore every day.

Celeste stared at her from the defense table.

The prosecutor asked Maya to describe the pool.

She did.

The stroller moving.

The splash.

Caleb under the water.

Celeste's hands on the stroller.

Then came cross-examination.

"Ms. Torres, you disliked my client, correct?"

"No."

"You were jealous of her relationship with Mr. Mercer?"

Maya almost laughed.

"No."

"You wanted to become important in that household."

Maya looked directly at the jury.

"I wanted a baby to breathe."

The courtroom went still.

The lawyer tried to suggest Maya had planted the memory card.

Then the prosecutor played the recovered video.

Celeste pushing the stroller.

Evelyn approaching the camera.

Maya diving into the pool.

No accusation could erase what everyone could see.

Then they played Claire's audio.

If the maid catches it before the pool, Celeste pushes harder.

Celeste's face collapsed.

During a break, she asked for a deal.

But before the judge dismissed the jury, Celeste turned toward Maya. For months she had carried herself like wealth made her untouchable. Now her eyes were red, her hands shook, and the confidence was gone.

"You ruined my life," she whispered.

Maya held her gaze.

"No. I pulled a baby out of a pool. You did the rest."

Celeste looked away first.

She agreed to testify against Evelyn in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Her testimony connected every piece: the trust, the staged romance, the pool plan, the car sabotage, and the attempted framing of Maya.

Six weeks later, the jury convicted Evelyn on every major count.

As deputies led her away, she looked at Adrian.

"You will regret choosing strangers over blood."

Adrian took Caleb from Maya's arms.

"Blood almost killed my son."

Then he looked at Maya.

May you like

"A stranger saved him."

But Maya knew she was no longer a stranger.
