Chapter 3 - Someone Inside

Adrian read the message twice.

Then he handed the phone to Maya.

She went cold.

"They know we're looking."

"Which means the card exists," Adrian said.

Celeste stepped closer. "Or someone is trying to manipulate you."

Adrian looked at her. "Someone threatened my son less than an hour after he almost drowned. You're worried about manipulation?"

Her face hardened.

For the first time, Maya saw something behind the polished smile. Not fear. Anger.

Adrian ordered the gates locked and every employee kept on the property until police arrived. His mother, Evelyn Mercer, swept into the foyer ten minutes later wearing pearls and an expression of controlled disgust.

"Why are there police cars outside my home?"

"My home," Adrian corrected. "And Caleb nearly drowned."

Evelyn stared at Maya. "Because of her?"

"Because someone pushed his stroller."

"Celeste told me what happened."

Maya looked up sharply. "When?"

Evelyn paused.

Adrian caught it.

"When did she tell you?"

"A few minutes ago."

"You've been upstairs with the luncheon committee for forty minutes."

Silence.

Celeste cut in. "I texted her."

Adrian held out his hand. "Show me."

Celeste's eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?"

"Show me the text."

She unlocked her phone slowly.

There was no message.

Evelyn's voice became sharp. "This is absurd. My grandson is alive. That should be the focus."

Maya stared at her.

Alive.

Not safe.

Not thank God.

Just alive.

Later, while police questioned the guests, Maya returned to the pool to collect her wet shoes. Beneath the console table where towels were stored, she found something taped to the underside.

A tiny plastic case.

Inside was a microSD card.

Her breath caught.

She turned toward the house.

May you like

A shadow moved behind the glass doors.

Then the lights went out.
