Chapter 7 - The Price of Silence

Owen broke in less than a minute.
Evelyn had been paying him for years to hide small things: visitors after midnight, deleted footage, private meetings in unused rooms.
But the pool plan was different.
"Celeste came to me yesterday," he said. "She told me to shut down the west camera for five minutes. I refused."
"So who deleted the footage?" Brooks asked.
"Mrs. Mercer knew the override code."
Evelyn laughed from the staircase. "This is pathetic."
Brooks ordered an officer to remain with her.
Owen continued.
"Celeste said the baby wasn't supposed to die. She said someone would be close enough to rescue him."
Maya's stomach turned.
"Me."
Owen looked at her. "Yes."
Adrian's face changed.
"They needed Maya to save him?"
"They needed her near the stroller. The plan was to make her look responsible."
Brooks asked the obvious question.
"Why?"
Owen swallowed.
"Because if Adrian believed his employee had endangered Caleb, he'd fire her. Then Celeste would convince him the estate wasn't safe and push for private guardianship arrangements."
Adrian stared at him. "Guardianship for what?"
Owen shook his head. "I don't know."
Maya did.
She remembered seeing legal folders on Evelyn's desk two weeks earlier while dusting.
MERCER FAMILY TRUST.
SUCCESSION CONDITIONS.
She ran to the library.
The cabinet was locked.
Adrian smashed it open.
Inside were trust documents showing that Caleb, as Adrian's only child, controlled the voting transfer of Mercer Holdings if Adrian died or became legally incapacitated.
Until Caleb turned eighteen, his legal guardian could control those shares.
Maya whispered, "This is about the company."
Adrian turned the final page.
His mother's name appeared under an old clause.
TEMPORARY FAMILY TRUSTEE IN THE EVENT OF PARENTAL UNFITNESS.
Then Brooks received another call.
Owen's daughter had been found safe.

But Celeste had left a message with her.
"Tell Adrian," the little girl said, crying, "the pool was only rehearsal."
