Chapter 1 - THE CUPCAKE ON THE FLOOR

The scream cut through the music before I even saw my daughter.

I had been gone for less than five minutes.

When I returned, the string quartet was still playing, waiters were still carrying champagne, and two hundred wedding guests were still smiling beneath crystal chandeliers.

But my four-year-old daughter was on the floor.

A pink cupcake lay smashed beside her. Frosting streaked the polished marble. Lily's small hands were trembling, and one of her white shoes had come off.

"Mommy."

Her voice broke me before anything else could.

I dropped to my knees. "Baby, what happened?"

Lily pointed behind me.

My mother-in-law, Diane, stood beside the dessert table in a silver evening gown, arms folded, face perfectly calm.

"She took dessert before dinner," Diane said. "I corrected her."

I stared at her. "Corrected her how?"

Lily whispered, "Grandma slapped it away. Then she pushed me."

The room around us seemed to lose sound.

I looked at Diane again. "You pushed a four-year-old child?"

"Don't be dramatic, Claire. She needed discipline."

Diane bent down and grabbed Lily's wrist.

I slapped her hand away. "Do not touch my daughter."

Her eyes hardened.

Then she shoved me.

I caught myself against a chair, stood, and slapped her across the face so hard the nearest champagne glasses rattled.

The entire reception went silent.

Diane slowly turned back toward me, one hand pressed to her cheek.

"You just made the biggest mistake of your life," she whispered.

Before I could answer, my sister Rachel appeared in her wedding dress.

And she was carrying another cupcake.
