Chapter 19 - THE LAST PIECE OF ROBERT'S STORY

Even in handcuffs, Diane tried to leave one final wound behind.

And for several hours, it worked.

Mark questioned Thomas again.

This time, Thomas admitted he had hidden one fact.

Robert eventually discovered the affair and confronted both of them.

The final transfer that collapsed the company did carry Robert's real signature.

But he had signed it under false pretenses.

Diane told him the transfer would protect the business from creditors.

Thomas knew that was a lie.

"I could have stopped it," Thomas said. "I didn't."

Mark's face hardened. "Because you loved her?"

Thomas looked down. "Because I was selfish."

The truth was uglier than the simple story Diane had told for twenty years.

Robert was not a perfect victim.

Thomas was not a cartoon thief.

Diane was not acting alone.

But she had spent decades rewriting everyone's role so she could remain the injured party.

Karen agreed to testify.

Peter turned over every document he had withheld and accepted professional discipline for his part.

The notary cooperated.

The fraudulent lake closing was canceled.

The remaining trust assets were frozen.

And for the first time in years, Mark could see exactly what belonged to him and exactly what had been taken.

Diane was charged with multiple fraud-related offenses, conspiracy, identity theft, and offenses connected to the threats and coercion. Victor faced his own list of charges.

But none of that answered the question Lily asked one evening while I tucked her into bed.

"Is Grandma mad at me?"

I sat beside her.

"No, baby. Grandma made bad choices. None of them were because of you."

"Will she come back?"

"Not unless Mommy and Daddy say it's safe."

Lily thought about that.

Then she whispered, "I don't want her to be lonely."

That nearly broke me.

After everything Diane had done, my daughter still worried about her.

I kissed Lily's forehead.

"Being kind doesn't mean you have to let someone hurt you."

She nodded sleepily.

The next morning, an envelope arrived from the county jail.

Diane had written to Lily.
