Chapter 6 - WHO REALLY PAID FOR THE WEDDING

Rachel had spent a year saving for her wedding.

Our parents contributed. Ben's family contributed. Rachel and Ben covered the rest.

At least that was what we believed.

But the spreadsheet said Diane had made a $35,000 payment to the venue three months earlier.

Rachel shook her head. "No. She didn't pay for anything."

We called the venue manager.

The payment existed.

It had been credited anonymously toward Rachel's balance.

Rachel stared at the detective. "Why would she secretly pay for my wedding?"

Then Mark noticed another column in the spreadsheet.

PURPOSE.

Beside the wedding payment was one word.

ACCESS.

The detective asked what access Diane had gained after paying.

Rachel thought for a moment.

"She started acting like she was part of the planning committee. The venue gave her vendor information because they thought she was an authorized family contact."

"Guest list?" I asked.

"Yes. Seating chart too."

"Security information?"

Rachel looked at me.

The answer was obvious.

Her public humiliation at the reception had not been anticipated.

But she had prepared for the venue anyway.

For something.

We returned to the wedding just after midnight. Most guests were gone. Lily was asleep upstairs in the bridal suite with Ben's mother sitting beside her.

Rachel walked through the empty ballroom and stopped near table fourteen.

"Diane insisted on this table," she said.

"Why?"

She pointed toward the wall.

A security camera covered the dance floor, the bar, and every nearby table.

Every table except fourteen.

Mark knelt beside Diane's assigned chair.

Underneath it, taped to the frame, was a tiny envelope.

Inside was a brass key and a hotel room number.

814.

Ben looked toward the elevators.

"She never booked a room here."

Rachel checked the guest reservations.

Room 814 was registered to a name none of us recognized.

Thomas Vale.

Mark whispered, "I know that name."

I turned to him.

May you like

"Who is he?"

"The man my mother blamed for ruining my father."
