Chapter 16 - THE SISTER MARK NEVER KNEW

Karen Mercer was born during the final year of Diane's affair with Thomas.

Thomas claimed Diane told him the baby had died shortly after birth.

She had lied.

Instead, she placed Karen with relatives in another state, supported her quietly, and later brought her into the financial operation.

Mark sat at our dining table staring at the documents.

"I have a half sister."

Thomas nodded on the video call.

"And I have a daughter I thought I buried twenty-eight years ago."

The police located Karen before the flight.

She was not at the airport.

She was in a motel outside the city, alone and terrified.

Unlike Diane and Victor, she surrendered immediately.

"Why didn't you leave?" Mark asked when prosecutors allowed a supervised meeting.

Karen looked at him with red eyes.

"Because she raised me to believe I owed her for keeping me alive."

The sentence sounded horrifyingly familiar.

Begging children don't eat.

You don't belong at the celebration.

Daddy will leave if you tell.

Diane's weapon had always been the same.

Make someone feel indebted.

Then make them afraid of losing everything.

Karen gave police access to an encrypted cloud account.

Inside were records showing nearly $5.7 million in missing investor money, forged trust transfers, and payments to Victor.

More importantly, there were voice messages.

In one, Diane said:

"If Mark signs Monday, we survive. If he doesn't, we make him too busy protecting his family to interfere."

Mark closed his eyes.

That was the proof we needed.

The cruelty at the wedding had been part of a larger plan.

Maybe Diane had not known exactly how far the scene would go.

But she had intended to create chaos around Lily.

Karen handed us one final file.

"There's something else," she said.

It was a life insurance policy.

Insured person: Mark Mercer.

Beneficiary: Diane Mercer.

Coverage amount: $3 million.

Issue date: four months earlier.

Mark stared at it.

"I never applied for life insurance."

Karen whispered, "I know."
