Chapter 14 - Grace’s Video

Grace appeared on screen wearing a knit cap.

Her face was thin.

Her eyes were sharp.

“Arthur, if Lily gives you this, then I probably ran out of time.”

He cried before she finished the sentence.

“You are a good father.”

Arthur covered his mouth.

“But good fathers can still miss things.”

He let out a broken laugh.

Of course she would say it exactly that way.

“You hate conflict because of your father. I understand. But Lily cannot grow up believing the safest adult is the one who stays quiet.”

Arthur looked away.

Grace said:

“If Victoria ever makes you choose between family peace and Lily’s safety, choose Lily and let the family be angry.”

He paused the video.

Margaret sat beside him.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“Do not turn that into another reason to hate yourself.”

Arthur shook his head.

“I’m trying not to.”

Grace’s video continued.

She explained Victoria’s debts.

Charles’s questions.

But she also said something unexpected.

“Victoria loves Lily.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

“That is what makes this complicated. People can love someone and still become unsafe when resentment, money, and control take over.”

Margaret whispered:

“True.”

Grace ended with:

“Do not teach Lily that love excuses danger. Teach her that love and boundaries can exist at the same time.”

The screen went black.

Arthur sat in silence.

Later that afternoon, Rachel called.

Victoria wanted to plead guilty to the unauthorized surveillance and financial charges under negotiation.

But she disputed the staircase shove as intentional harm.

Arthur asked:

“Does Lily have to testify?”

“Possibly not if the video is admitted and an agreement is reached.”

That decided it for him.

He did not want Lily in a courtroom if it could be avoided.

Then Rachel added:

“Victoria has one condition.”

“She doesn’t get conditions.”

“Not a legal condition. A request.”

“What?”

“She wants to give you a document directly.”

“What document?”

“A letter from Grace.”

Arthur stared.

May you like

“There can’t be another one.”

Apparently there could.
