Chapter 20 - The Top of the Stairs

Two years after the fall, Lily stood at the top of the marble staircase in a pale blue dress.

Arthur stopped below.

For one second, memory hit him.

“Dad, stop staring.”

“Sorry.”

Today was not about fear.

It was Elena’s wedding.

The house was full of flowers.

Margaret was complaining about the caterer.

Rachel was fixing place cards nobody asked her to fix.

Lily was the flower girl.

Arthur walked upstairs.

Elena stepped out of the guest room wearing a simple white gown.

“You look like a princess.”

“So do you.”

Arthur looked at the woman who had once thrown herself across marble to protect his child.

“Ready?”

They walked downstairs together.

At the bottom landing, Lily paused.

Exactly where Elena had caught her.

“I remember.”

His throat tightened.

“Me too.”

“Do you hate Aunt Vicky?”

Arthur thought carefully.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to carry her choices around every day.”

“Do you forgive her?”

“Not the same thing.”

Lily considered that.

Outside, music began.

Elena’s fiancé waited beneath a garden arch.

Arthur offered Elena his arm.

“I have a father.”

“I know.”

“I’m walking myself.”

“Of course you are.”

Lily scattered flower petals down the aisle.

No one controlling her hand.

No one whispering that her father was not there.

That was the difference.

Later, after the ceremony, Lily climbed onto his lap.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Mommy knew Elena would save me.”

Arthur looked toward Elena dancing under the lights.

“I think Mommy hoped someone would.”

Lily rested her head against him.

Arthur looked back at the house.

The staircase visible through the glass doors.

Once, he thought protecting his family meant preventing conflict.

Now he knew better.

Protection meant listening when the truth was inconvenient.

It meant reading the document.

Opening the attachment.

Believing the frightened child.

Choosing safety before family pride.

And being present before someone had to scream for him.

Lily squeezed his hand.

“Daddy, look.”

She pointed toward Elena laughing as Margaret tried to dance.

Arthur smiled.

May you like

“I’m looking.”

And this time, he was.
