Chapter 18 - Sentencing Day

Arthur did not bring Lily to court.

Margaret stayed with her.

Elena stayed too.

Arthur sat beside Rachel while Victoria entered with her attorney.

She looked smaller.

The prosecutor described the financial scheme.

The forged affidavits.

The staircase video.

The judge asked whether Victoria wished to speak.

“I told myself I was protecting Lily.”

Arthur looked at her.

“I was protecting my access to her, my pride, and money I believed I deserved.”

“I pushed a child because I was afraid she would expose me.”

The courtroom stayed silent.

“I cannot call that love.”

Arthur looked down.

Grace would have understood that sentence.

Victoria received a prison sentence, restitution obligations, probation conditions after release, and a long-term no-contact order subject to future court review.

Charles received separate consequences for the financial scheme and document fraud.

The trust money began returning through frozen accounts, insurance recovery, and restitution.

After court, reporters waited outside.

Arthur ignored them.

One shouted:

“Do you forgive Victoria?”

Then answered once.

“Forgiveness is not today’s job.”

At home, Lily was baking cookies with Margaret.

Elena sat at the table with her arm fully healed.

Lily ran to Arthur.

“Daddy!”

“How was your day?”

“Grandma burned cookies.”

Margaret shouted:

“Lies!”

Arthur held her tighter.

Then loosened his grip.

He did not want love to feel like holding too tightly either.

That evening, Lily asked:

“Is Vicky gone?”

Arthur chose his words.

“She won’t come here.”

“Ever?”

“Not unless you are older and a court says it is safe, and you want it.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Okay.”

No lecture about family.

Then Lily walked toward the staircase.

Arthur’s body tensed.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“I’m not scared of stairs.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

May you like

She took his hand anyway.

And together, they walked up.
