Chapter 4 - Grace’s Trust

Grace Bennett had died from cancer two years earlier.
She had prepared for everything she could.
Life insurance.
Medical directives.
Arthur thought the trust held about two million dollars.
His attorney, Rachel Kim, corrected him the next morning.
“Four point six.”
“What?”
“Grace’s father transferred additional assets after her death.”
“Why didn’t I know?”
“You did.”
Rachel opened an email.
Arthur had acknowledged it eighteen months earlier.
He barely remembered.
He had been grieving.
Trying to keep his company alive.
Victoria had been “helping.”
“The trust has a guardian-control clause.”
“What does that mean?”
“If you become unavailable, the person with temporary legal guardianship can petition for limited access to Lily’s support funds.”
“Victoria is her godmother.”
“Yes.”
“But not guardian.”
“Not currently.”
Rachel turned her laptop.
A draft petition appeared.
TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP — VICTORIA HAYES.
“I never approved this.”
“It isn’t filed.”
“Who wrote it?”
“Charles Mercer.”
The petition described Arthur as overworked.
Emotionally unstable after bereavement.
It described Lily as impulsive.
Difficult to supervise.
Arthur read the words twice.
The staged incidents.
A story was being built.
Rachel scrolled down.
Attached were incident summaries.
Lily falling near the pool.
Lily “running” on the stairs.
Lily supposedly wandering out the front gate.
Arthur remembered each event.
Every time, Victoria had been nearby.
Every time, she explained first.
Rachel said:
“If enough incidents created a safety concern, Victoria could argue that she should temporarily take Lily.”
“And then access the trust.”
“Under court supervision, but yes.”
Then Rachel found another document.
A proposed amendment to the trust.
It would replace Rachel as independent co-trustee.
With Charles Mercer.
Arthur’s signature line was blank.
But beneath it was a digital signature certificate already prepared.
“They were going to forge it.”
Rachel replied:
“Or trick you into signing it.”
Lily found something in her room.
“What?”
Margaret’s voice was tight.
“A letter from Grace.”

Arthur stopped breathing.
“It says, ‘If Victoria ever asks about Lily’s trust, call Rachel immediately.’”
