Chapter 1 - The Empty Plate

My lawyer called at four in the afternoon and told me to sit down before I opened the envelope.

I didn't sit down.

I drove home.

I was an hour early, so I let myself in quietly. From the dark hallway, I could see straight into the kitchen.

Three plates sat on the island. Chicken. Rice. Broccoli.

Melissa was serving our two youngest kids.

Emma, six, was eating with her eyes down.

Theo, four, pushed broccoli around with a fork.

And my ten-year-old son, Owen, stood four feet away with nothing in front of him.

"Could I have a piece of bread?" he asked.

Melissa didn't even turn.

"I cook for my own children. You aren't one of them."

Every muscle in my body locked.

Owen tried again.

"There's still rice."

"Go upstairs."

"But I'm hungry."

"Then maybe think about why you keep causing problems."

I stepped into the kitchen.

Melissa turned.

Her face changed before she spoke.

I went to Owen, crouched, and gently lifted his chin.

"What did she say?"

He stared at the floor.

"Owen."

His fingers twisted the hem of his T-shirt into two tight fists.

"She said she cooks for her own children," he whispered. "She said I'm not one of them."

Melissa started fast.

"Jack, he misunderstood."

"Did you feed him?"

"He already ate."

Owen shook his head.

I looked at Emma.

She stopped chewing.

Theo stared at his plate.

Then Melissa noticed the envelope in my hand.

All the color left her face.

"Where did you get that?"

I looked down at the return address.

Harrison & Cole Estate Law.

"My lawyer."

Her voice changed completely.

"What did he tell you?"

I tore open the envelope.

The first page was a petition filed in county court.

The second was a DNA report.

The third contained my electronic signature.

Except I had never signed it.

At the top of the petition were the words:

REQUEST TO REMOVE OWEN BENNETT AS BENEFICIARY AND DEPENDENT CHILD.

I looked at Melissa.

She whispered, "You weren't supposed to see that before tomorrow."
