Chapter 11 - Grant's Plan

Grant had prepared an affidavit claiming Melissa was unsafe and I was unstable.
He wanted temporary guardianship of Emma and Theo.
Grant wasn't protecting anyone.
He was planning to leave.
Melissa sat beside me at the police station.
"He was going to take my children."
"Yes."
She looked sick.
"He told me we were doing this for them."
I didn't answer.
Grant asked to speak with her.
Police allowed a recorded meeting.
I watched from another room.
Melissa entered first.
Grant smiled.
"You finally figured it out."
She stared at him.
"You used me."
"You wanted the money too."
"I wanted security."
"You wanted twelve million dollars."
Melissa flinched.
Grant leaned back.
"Don't rewrite yourself because you got caught."
She whispered, "You were going to take my kids."
"I needed leverage."
"They're your niece and nephew."
"So was Owen, legally."
Melissa stared at him.
That sentence ended whatever loyalty remained.
Grant began talking.
Walter had approached him months before.
The fake DNA test was Walter's idea.
The custody petition was Grant's.
The cruelty toward Owen?
That was Melissa.
Grant said it without hesitation.
"I never told you to stop feeding the kid."
She looked away.
Neither did I.
Grant offered investigators the missing page from the blue notebook.
He had hidden it in a safe-deposit box.
"What was on it?" I asked David.
He read the recovered scan.
My mother had written:
PETER SLOAN SAW WALTER ALTER THE ESCROW LEDGER.
Peter wasn't just Walter's assistant.
He was the witness who could prove the old theft.
Then police checked his holding cell.
Peter Sloan was gone.
Released twenty minutes earlier.
