Chapter 12 - The Witness

Peter had not escaped.

Someone had walked him out.

The release order came through a compromised county email account.

By midnight, state investigators were involved.

At 1:17 a.m., Peter called me.

"Mr. Bennett?"

"Where are you?"

"Don't ask."

"Police are looking for you."

"I know."

"Then go to them."

"I will. But Walter has people at the bank, and Grant has people at the courthouse."

My patience snapped.

"My son was nearly taken from school."

Silence.

Then Peter said, "That's why I'm calling."

He had kept copies of Walter's records for years.

He knew about the stolen Keller settlement.

He knew about the trust skimming.

He knew Walter planned to use Owen's removal to cover the audit.

"Why didn't you report it?"

"Because the first time I tried, Walter showed me my wife's medical debt and told me exactly what would happen if I lost my job."

Peter gave David a password to an encrypted cloud folder.

Inside were transaction logs, emails, and one audio file.

Walter's voice.

"Once the boy is out, the firstborn audit dies with him."

Grant answered, "And Melissa?"

"She'll get what she thinks she's getting."

"What does that mean?"

Walter laughed.

"Bellweather isn't hers."

David traced the actual ownership.

Bellweather Family Management was controlled through another LLC.

That LLC belonged to Walter's wife.

Melissa had been promised money she never controlled.

Grant had been promised a cut he would never receive.

Then another recording began.

Melissa's voice.

"If Jack finds out how Owen has been treated, he'll never forgive me."

Walter answered, "Then make sure he thinks the boy is the problem."

I stopped the recording.

That sentence hurt more than the money.

Because it was the plan in its simplest form.

Make a child carry the blame.

Then Peter sent one final file.

A photograph of Walter meeting Melissa six months before she claimed she first learned about the trust.

I looked at the date.

May you like

Our wedding anniversary.

Melissa had lied about when this began.
