Chapter 17 - My Mother's Voice

David played the recording in his office.

At first, she sounded tired.

Then sharp.

"Jack, if you're hearing this, Walter Briggs has probably done something I hoped he wouldn't."

I gripped the chair.

She explained the Keller settlement.

She had repaid Greg Keller in full.

Walter intercepted part of it.

When she discovered the missing money, Walter promised to correct the records.

He never did.

Then he began charging hidden fees against the trust.

"I made a mistake," my mother said. "I believed embarrassment was safer than public conflict."

"I should have reported him. I didn't. I was protecting the family name."

I looked at David.

He looked away.

My mother continued.

"If my silence ever hurts one of the children, do not repeat my mistake."

Owen.

The child who had been hurt by adults protecting themselves.

I closed my eyes.

Then my mother said something I did not expect.

"Greg Keller was not my enemy. He was also deceived."

Melissa's father had died believing my family stole from him.

My mother had died believing she could fix the record later.

Walter built a fortune inside the space between two families who never spoke honestly.

David stopped the recording.

"There's one more file."

It was Walter's private ledger.

Names.

Payments.

Judges' clerks.

Bank employees.

A lab consultant.

A county IT contractor.

That explained the forged release order.

The school pickup authorization.

The speed of the court petition.

This had grown beyond a family dispute.

Walter had built a small network around the trust.

Then one line caught my eye.

MELISSA - 75,000 - FINAL AFTER REMOVAL.

I stared at it.

She had told me she received forty thousand for lawyers.

Walter's ledger showed another seventy-five thousand promised after Owen was removed.

David asked quietly, "Did she know?"

I didn't answer.

I took a photo of the page.

Because I was done accepting anyone's version of the truth without evidence.
