Chapter 5 - The Trust Nobody Explained

David came to the house at nine that night.
I showed him everything.
He watched the footage twice.
Then he took off his glasses.
"Jack, your mother didn't create a normal family trust."
"Meaning?"
"She created a protected firstborn trust."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because your father lost most of the family company before he died. Evelyn wanted one asset nobody could leverage, borrow against, or sell."
David continued.
"The first biological child in your direct line becomes primary beneficiary at age ten."
"Owen turned ten in June."
"Exactly."
Summer.
The month everything changed.
"If he's removed?"
"The interest shifts to your next qualifying children, subject to court approval."
I looked toward the ceiling.
David placed a second folder on the table.
"I froze tomorrow's hearing."
"How?"
"The DNA report came from a lab whose license was suspended last year."
I almost smiled.
"Good."
"Don't celebrate."
He opened another page.
"A transfer instruction was submitted to First Cumberland yesterday."
"For what?"
"Four-point-two million dollars."
I stood.
"From Owen's trust?"
"To a holding company called Bellweather Family Management."
"Who owns it?"
David looked at Melissa.
She had come into the room without me noticing.
He answered anyway.
"Grant Keller owns forty percent."
Melissa went pale.
"And the rest?" I asked.
David slid over the corporate filing.
Sixty percent belonged to M. Bennett.
Melissa Bennett.
She whispered, "Jack, I can explain."
I laughed.
"Start with why my son didn't get dinner."
"That has nothing to do with the trust."
"It has everything to do with who you are."
Her face hardened.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
So did I.
One message.
TRANSFER REJECTED. JACK HAS BEEN ALERTED.

Melissa's eyes lifted to mine.
And she ran for the back door.
