Chapter 12 - The Townhouse

Vincent pushed Mia toward Hannah.

“Bathroom. Lock the door.”

“No!”

“Mia, go.”

She obeyed.

Marcus and two security officers moved toward the stairs.

Grant’s voice echoed upward.

“Give me the drive and this ends.”

Vincent stayed behind an interior wall.

“You broke into the wrong house.”

Grant laughed. “You still think this is about money?”

“What is it about?”

“Control.”

Vincent kept him talking while Marcus recorded.

“Grace was going to destroy everything Daniel and I built.”

“You cut her brakes.”

“I didn’t touch the car.”

“Your company paid the garage.”

“Companies pay people.”

“Celeste signed the authorization.”

“Celeste signs whatever keeps her alive.”

Grant moved up one step.

Security warned him back.

“I want the drive.”

Vincent looked at Daniel, who had insisted on coming.

“How did he know there was another copy?”

Grant laughed.

“Tell him, Danny.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“I told Grant Grace kept backups.”

“When?”

“The morning she died.”

Vincent could barely look at him.

“I thought he would return the money and stop.”

Grant rushed the stairs.

Marcus tackled him before he reached the landing.

A metal tool clattered away.

Police flooded in from the entrance.

Grant twisted on the floor as officers cuffed him.

“You think Grace was innocent?”

Vincent stared.

Grant smiled.

“She was leaving you.”

Daniel whispered, “Don’t.”

“She had divorce papers in the car.”

The bathroom door opened.

Mia stood there holding Grace’s sealed envelope.

“No,” she said.

Everyone turned.

“My mommy wasn’t leaving Daddy.”

May you like

She held the envelope out to Vincent.

“She was leaving him this.”
