Chapter 9 - The Real Result

The legitimate DNA test took less than a day.

99.9998%.

Vincent carried the report into the kitchen, where Mia sat with Hannah.

“Did they call?” Mia asked.

“They did.”

She put down her fork.

Vincent sat beside her.

“You are my biological daughter.”

Mia burst into tears.

He pulled her close.

“And even if that paper had said something else, you would still be mine.”

She held him tightly.

“Celeste lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she wanted you afraid.”

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Grant.

“You should stop digging,” he said.

Vincent stood. “Where are you?”

“Somewhere you can’t buy.”

“You cut Grace’s brakes.”

“I didn’t touch her car.”

“Your company paid the garage.”

Grant chuckled. “Grace had everything. You. Mia. Money. She still couldn’t leave things alone.”

Vincent’s voice went cold.

“She found you stealing.”

“She found a system she didn’t understand.”

Then Grant said, “You keep looking at the wrong witness.”

Vincent glanced at Mia.

“What does that mean?”

“Ask your daughter what she saw the day Grace died.”

The line ended.

Mia had heard enough to know her name was mentioned.

“Daddy?”

Vincent crouched.

“Do you remember the last day you saw Mommy?”

Mia went quiet.

Then she nodded.

“She wore the green coat.”

Vincent’s heart began to pound.

“Who else was there?”

“Mr. Grant.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Mia continued.

“And the shiny lady.”

“Celeste?”

“Yes.”

Then Mia frowned.

“And another man.”

Vincent swallowed.

“Do you know who?”

She nodded.

“He comes to your office.”

Vincent’s chest tightened.

May you like

“Who, Mia?”

“Uncle Daniel.”
