Chapter 4 - The Hidden Camera

Vincent was still staring at Grant’s photograph when a text arrived from an unknown number.

It showed Mia asleep in her bedroom.

Taken less than one minute ago.

Vincent ran.

He found Mia safely changing clothes with Dr. Rivera, but the angle of the picture came from inside the room.

Marcus Reed, Vincent’s security chief, searched the space.

Inside a decorative air vent, he found a tiny camera.

Not part of the building system.

Two more were discovered later.

One in the hallway.

One in Grace’s old room.

“Someone wanted to know who entered that room,” Marcus said.

He checked access logs.

The installation crew had used an executive service credential.

Grant Keller’s.

Celeste sat down hard.

Vincent looked at her. “You knew.”

“No.”

“You flinched when I said his name.”

“This is insane.”

Mia appeared in the doorway.

“Daddy?”

Vincent softened. “Yes?”

“Celeste said Mr. Grant could make you believe I wasn’t yours.”

The room froze.

Celeste whispered, “Mia, stop.”

“And she showed me a paper.”

Vincent turned.

“What paper?”

Mia pointed toward the fireplace.

“I hid it where she burns things.”

Behind the ash tray, Vincent found a folded page inside a plastic bag.

PATERNITY ANALYSIS.

Vincent Hale.

Mia Hale.

Probability of paternity: 0.00%.

Mia’s voice broke.

“She said you’d send me away when you found out.”

Vincent looked at Celeste.

May you like

Her face had gone completely white.

And suddenly the cameras were no longer the worst thing in the room.
