Chapter 19 - One Year Later

Grant Keller was convicted.

The sentence would keep him in prison for decades.

Kevin Shaw took a deal and testified.

Celeste received prison time for conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and what she had done to Mia.

Daniel resigned from Hale Capital.

Vincent did not forgive him quickly.

Some wounds deserved honesty more than speed.

But Daniel kept showing up to therapy, to court, and to every meeting prosecutors requested.

Months later, Vincent allowed him to send Mia a birthday card.

Mia decided whether to open it.

No one decided for her.

The penthouse changed.

Vincent turned Grace’s old room into a family library while keeping her desk, photographs, and bluebird display exactly where Mia wanted them.

He hired a child-development specialist to review household rules.

No employee was ever again told to stay silent around family conflict.

And Vincent changed his calendar.

Not because money stopped mattering.

Because Mia mattered more.

On the night before her seventh birthday, she came into his room carrying the white teddy bear he had dropped a year earlier.

“Do you remember?”

Vincent looked at it.

“Every second.”

“I thought you were going to be mad at me.”

“For what?”

“For making Celeste mad.”

He sat up.

“Mia, what Celeste did was her choice.”

“But if I had just told her where the bird was…”

“No.”

His voice was gentle but firm.

“You never earn someone’s cruelty.”

Mia was quiet.

Then she repeated Grace’s line.

“I was born loved.”

Vincent smiled.

“You were.”

“I stay loved.”

“Always.”

She climbed into his arms.

Tomorrow there would be pancakes, strawberries, Hannah, Dr. Rivera, Marcus, and two school friends.

No ballroom.

No cameras.

No strangers.

Just people Mia chose.

Before she went to sleep, she asked one final question.

“Can we clean the blue words off the floor tomorrow?”

Vincent paused.

“Are you sure?”

May you like

She nodded.

“I don’t need them anymore.”
