Chapter 10 - The Copy Thomas Kept

Thomas Cole did not trust digital systems.
He printed everything.
Naomi remembered the note.
Do not accuse without proof.
Adrian searched the office again.
Nothing.
Evelyn stood at the bookshelf.
Then laughed once.
“Of course.”
Thomas loved biographies.
Never fiction.
Except one book.
The Count of Monte Cristo.
Adrian pulled it down.
The pages had been cut hollow.
Inside:
a USB drive.
Naomi stared.
“Your father was dramatic.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“Only in private.”
The drive contained scans.
Brighton invoices.
Bank confirmations.
Approval emails.
Thomas’s handwritten notes.
Vanessa had not signed the earliest payments.
Graham Pike had.
But later, Vanessa began approving “event reimbursements.”
Then Daniel Reece appeared.
Thomas had mapped the flow.
Money out of the foundation.
Information out of Cole Group.
Benefits back to Vanessa and Pike.
One PDF contained a draft email Thomas never sent.
Vanessa,
I know enough.
Meet me Monday morning with Adrian present.
He died Sunday night.
Natural causes.
Again, Naomi refused speculation.
But the timing explained why Vanessa had spent two years cleaning.
Hard drives.
Files.
Elena.
Claire.
Anyone tied to the audit.
Then another folder appeared.
PERSONAL.
Inside was a letter to Adrian.
Son,
You are good at trusting people you love.
That is not a weakness.
Refusing to verify when trust becomes inconvenient is.
Adrian stopped reading.
Naomi looked away.
Evelyn cried silently.
The letter ended:
If this becomes public, protect the innocent before you protect the name.
That sentence decided what Adrian did next.
He called the foundation board.
Full disclosure.
Independent investigation.
No quiet settlement.
No private cleanup.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered.
Her first words:
“If you expose this, Claire goes down too.”
Adrian looked at his sister.
Claire had heard.
Vanessa continued:
“And so does your mother.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“What does she have on me?”
May you like
Vanessa laughed.
“Ask her about the lake house.”
