Chapter 17 - The Statement

Adrian drafted twelve versions.

Angry.

Polished.

Legal.

Emotional.

Naomi hated all of them.

“You asked.”

“I did.”

“They sound like a man trying to win.”

“What should I sound like?”

“A man telling the truth.”

He deleted everything.

At sentencing, he stood.

Vanessa sat at the defense table.

Daniel Reece was in a separate proceeding.

Pike had pleaded guilty under cooperation terms.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Then at the judge.

“I trusted her.”

Simple.

“That was my decision.”

He did not call himself a victim only.

He acknowledged failures.

He ignored warnings.

He let charm become evidence.

He allowed staff concerns to seem less important than family comfort.

Then:

“But trust is not permission to steal, frame employees, weaponize private pain, or manipulate the people around you.”

Naomi sat behind Evelyn.

Caleb sat with Elena.

Claire did not attend.

Her choice.

Adrian continued.

“I do not want revenge.”

Vanessa looked up.

“I want consequences that make repeating this harder.”

That was all.

The sentence was substantial.

Restitution.

Incarceration.

Supervised release.

No contact with certain witnesses.

Professional and financial restrictions.

Not cinematic.

Real.

Outside court, reporters shouted.

Adrian gave no statement.

Naomi did not speak.

Evelyn did.

One sentence.

“We are rebuilding systems, not reputations.”

Then they left.

Months passed.

Cole Foundation donations initially dropped.

Then recovered.

Transparency helped.

Not instantly.

Nothing real did.

Adrian and Claire repaired slowly.

Evelyn stopped pretending she always knew best.

Naomi’s company gained clients.

Leah teased her about finally owning something besides black jackets.

Then Caleb called one evening.

“Turn on Channel Seven.”

Naomi did.

A feature about workplace courage.

His interview.

He said:

“I didn’t do anything brave. I just said what I saw.”

Naomi smiled.

That was exactly what brave people often said.

Then the report showed the gala clip.

Vanessa’s kick.

Naomi catching her ankle.

Naomi turned off the television before the replay finished.

May you like

She had lived it once.

That was enough.
