Chapter 15 - No Private Conversation

Vanessa asked again.

Naomi refused again.

No private meeting.

No emotional showdown.

No chance to rewrite history.

If Vanessa wanted to speak, attorneys present.

Recorder on.

Door open.

That was the meeting.

Vanessa entered without makeup.

Naomi noticed she still looked expensive.

Money changed presentation before it changed consequences.

Vanessa sat.

“I owe you an apology.”

Naomi said:

“You owe a statement.”

Vanessa flinched.

Then began.

She admitted the kick was staged.

She expected Naomi to fall.

She expected the photographer to capture Naomi grabbing at her.

Then she would claim assault.

Fire Naomi.

Discredit her.

Keep the audit buried.

Naomi asked:

“Why smile?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I thought it worked.”

The answer was worse than denial.

Then Vanessa described Reece.

Pike.

The payments.

The leaked information.

The planted bracelet.

The threat photo of Leah.

“I didn’t order anyone to hurt her.”

Naomi’s voice stayed flat.

“You ordered someone to make me believe they could.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian sat behind Naomi.

Silent.

Vanessa looked at him once.

He looked away.

Then she said:

“I did love you.”

Adrian finally spoke.

“Don’t.”

Her face broke.

Maybe real.

Maybe not.

It no longer mattered.

Rachel asked about Thomas Cole.

Vanessa said she never harmed him.

She did meet him in the archive room.

He confronted her.

She denied everything.

He told her:

“If you stay near my son, eventually your need for control will show itself.”

Vanessa cried.

Thomas had known.

Adrian whispered:

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

Then Naomi asked the last question.

“Why me?”

Vanessa gave the simplest answer.

“You didn’t act impressed by me.”

Naomi almost smiled.

That was all.

Power hated people who did not mirror it back.

The meeting ended.

On the way out, Vanessa stopped.

“Naomi.”

Naomi looked up.

Vanessa said:

“I’m sorry.”

Naomi replied:

“I heard you.”

Not forgiveness.

Not cruelty.

Just receipt.

Then Rachel’s phone buzzed.

Daniel Reece had been arrested.

And authorities had seized his private server.

What they found would make the foundation fraud look small.
