Chapter 11 - The Lake House

The lake house belonged to the foundation.
Technically.
Thomas donated it ten years earlier for retreat use.
Evelyn sometimes stayed there.
So did board members.
Vanessa claimed Evelyn had used foundation property privately without reporting it.
True.
But incomplete.
Evelyn reimbursed every personal stay.
Receipts existed.
Vanessa had removed the reimbursement records.
Again.
Truth cut into a lie.
Naomi looked at Adrian.
“She doesn’t need innocence.”
“What?”
“She needs confusion.”
If everyone looked compromised, no one looked credible.
Claire.
Evelyn.
Elena.
Naomi.
Adrian.
Vanessa did not need to win every accusation.
She needed mud.
Enough to make the public stop distinguishing.
Then Graham Pike disappeared.
His lawyer said he was “traveling.”
Daniel Reece denied contact.
Vanessa stopped answering.
A week passed.
Then Caleb found Naomi after a board meeting.
“I remembered something.”
The gala night.
Before Vanessa kicked Naomi, she had been speaking to a photographer.
Not event staff.
Freelance.
Caleb heard Vanessa say:
“Make sure you get the fall.”
The fall.
She expected Naomi to hit the floor.
She expected the image.
Poor maid attacks glamorous fiancée after losing control.
Naomi caught her ankle and broke the script.
Rachel tracked the photographer.
He turned over messages.
Vanessa paid him $2,500.
Instructions:
FOCUS ON NAOMI AFTER 9:10.
GET REACTION.
IF INCIDENT, KEEP SHOOTING.
Adrian read them twice.
“She planned the kick.”
“Yes,” Naomi said.
“Why?”
“To fire me publicly.”
“And discredit you.”
“And make the camera outage look convenient.”
Then another message surfaced.
From Vanessa to Marcus Hale:
9:12. TWO MINUTES IS ENOUGH.
The outage was not twelve minutes.
Only two were needed.
One kick.
One fall.
One accusation.
One photo.
Then Vanessa would have a reason to remove Naomi before the audit exploded.

Instead Naomi caught her ankle.
And Vanessa’s entire plan landed on one frozen frame she could no longer control.
