Chapter 1 - THE GIRL IN THE AISLE

The first thing Adrian Vale heard was a baby crying.
Not the string quartet. Not the priest. Not the two hundred guests waiting for him to say I do.
A baby.
Then the ballroom doors slammed open.
A barefoot girl stood beneath the gold archway, shaking so hard she could barely stay upright. Her blue dress was torn at one knee. Her hair was tangled from rain. In her arms, a baby in a pink blanket screamed against her shoulder.
The girl looked straight at Adrian.
“Daddy.”
The word hit him harder than a gunshot.
Victoria moved first.
Her smile vanished. She swept down the aisle in her white silk gown, grabbed the girl by the arm, and hissed, “You do not belong here.”
“Let go of me!”
The baby wailed louder.
Victoria pulled again.
Adrian was off the platform before anyone else moved.
“Take your hand off her.”
Victoria froze.
“Adrian, this is some kind of stunt.”
The girl twisted free and ran into him. She smelled like rain and bus exhaust. He looked down at her face and felt the room tilt.
Clara.
Older. Thinner. Terrified.
But Clara.
His daughter, whom he had been told was dead eighteen months ago.
Her fingers opened around a silver necklace.
The Vale family crest hung from the chain.
Beside it was a tiny photograph of Adrian holding Clara when she was four.
On the back, in Elise Harper’s handwriting, were six words:
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, FIND HER FATHER.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
She had gone pale.
“You knew,” he said.
“No.”
Clara buried her face against his jacket.
“She came to the blue house,” she whispered. “She told Miss Bell you could never see us.”
The ballroom went silent.
Adrian removed his wedding ring and placed it on the nearest table.
“I will not marry you.”
Victoria’s mouth opened.
“This wedding is over.”
May you like
Then Clara lifted her head and whispered something only he heard.
“Daddy, Mommy isn’t dead.”
