Chapter 19 - THE LAST LIE

Federal agents trapped Charles in the garage.
He took Sophie hostage behind a van, one arm around her throat, gun pressed beneath her jaw.
“You ungrateful little fool,” he whispered.
Sophie was crying, but she held the red folder tight.
Adrian watched from behind a ballistic shield with Ortiz.
“Let her go,” he called.
Charles laughed.
“You always thought family made you strong.”
“No. Family makes you responsible.”
Charles dragged Sophie toward the exit.
She suddenly dropped her weight.
The gun shifted.
Ortiz fired once.
Charles fell.
Alive.
For the first time since Clara entered the ballroom, nobody ran away.
The red folder contained the missing ledger pages and handwritten instructions from Charles to Dane.
Cause mechanical failure. No witnesses.
Below it was another note in Victoria’s handwriting:
Do not hurt Elise. Just make her disappear until the wedding is done.
Victoria was guilty of kidnapping, fraud, unlawful imprisonment, and attempted poisoning.
But Charles had ordered the crash.
The distinction did not make her innocent.
It made the truth uglier.
Weeks later, Victoria agreed to testify against her father in exchange for a plea that still carried years in prison.
Charles refused every deal.
Judge Wexler was charged.
Bradley lost his license and pleaded guilty.
Ravenwood’s director was indicted.
The fake marriage certificate was voided.
The trust amendment was destroyed.
And Elise came home.
Not to the old life.
There was no old life anymore.
One evening, Clara found Adrian standing in the nursery while Mia slept.
“Are you and Mommy getting married again?”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“That’s not something we need to decide right now.”
Clara thought about it.
“Good.”
“Good?”
She nodded seriously.
“Weddings are dangerous.”
Adrian laughed for the first time in months.

Then Clara handed him the family-crest necklace.
“I don’t need this to find you anymore.”
