Chapter 20 - THE FAMILY PICTURE

One year later, Adrian returned to the same ballroom.

Not for a wedding.

The Vale Foundation was holding a fundraiser for children separated from parents through fraud, coercion, or abuse. Elise had helped design the legal-aid program herself.

She was stronger now. Still healing, still angry on some days, still learning how to trust ordinary rooms with unlocked doors.

Marcus walked with a slight limp and complained about every physical-therapy appointment.

Noah had started college on a scholarship he insisted he had earned, not been given.

Margaret Bellamy volunteered twice a week at the foundation office.

Clara wore shoes this time.

She reminded everyone of that fact repeatedly.

Mia, now nearly two, refused to stay still for photographs.

When the photographer called the family forward, Clara suddenly stopped.

Adrian saw it immediately.

A year disappeared from her face.

The ballroom. Victoria’s hand on her arm. Guests staring as if she did not belong.

Adrian knelt beside her.

“You choose where we stand.”

Clara looked at the backdrop.

Then at Elise.

Then at Mia.

She took Adrian’s hand and led him to the center.

“Mommy here.”

Elise stood on his other side.

“Mia here.”

Clara lifted her sister into Adrian’s arms.

“And me here.”

She stepped directly beside him.

The photographer smiled.

“Ready?”

Clara shook her head.

“Wait.”

She pulled the old silver crest necklace from her pocket and wrapped it around Adrian’s wrist instead of her own neck.

“Now nobody gets lost.”

Elise covered her mouth.

Adrian bent and kissed Clara’s hair.

The camera flashed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

A year earlier, Victoria had tried to drag two children out of a wedding before their father could see them.

Now their photograph filled the ballroom screen behind the stage.

Clara looked up at it and smiled.

Not because a picture proved she belonged.

May you like

Because she finally knew she did.

And this time, nobody could erase her.
