Chapter 12 - THEY CAME FOR THE GIRLS

Two men in suits arrived at the pediatric floor carrying court papers and a county badge.

They demanded Clara and Mia immediately.

The charge nurse refused.

“Not until hospital counsel verifies this.”

One man smiled.

“You’re interfering with a lawful order.”

Then Marcus arrived with Detective Ortiz.

The badge was fake.

The court order was real.

That was worse.

Charles had found a judge willing to sign an emergency petition based on fabricated claims that Adrian was violent, Elise was mentally incompetent, and the children had been placed safely with Margaret Bellamy by family agreement.

Every lie was supported by documents.

Forged documents.

But documents nonetheless.

Clara heard enough to understand one thing.

“They’re taking us again?”

Adrian knelt in front of her.

“No.”

“You said nobody could.”

“And I meant it.”

This time his promise had lawyers behind it.

By evening, a family-court judge suspended Charles’s order after seeing the Ravenwood records, DNA results, and Victoria’s arrest report.

But Charles disappeared before police could serve a warrant.

Elise sat beside Adrian after Clara finally fell asleep.

“We keep reacting,” she said.

“To what?”

“To whatever they built years ago.”

Adrian looked at her.

Elise tapped the trust amendment.

“Charles didn’t start this for Victoria’s wedding. The wedding was just the finish line.”

“What was the beginning?”

“My audit.”

She remembered a hidden account used to move money out of the Vale Family Trust through fake construction vendors.

One vendor name kept appearing.

Northlight Restoration.

Marcus searched the company.

It owned an abandoned estate forty miles west of Boston.

Property records showed a recent utility spike.

Someone was living there.

Then Clara woke from the couch.

“Northlight?” she whispered.

Adrian turned.

“You know that word?”

May you like

Clara nodded.

“Miss Victoria said Mommy would be moved to Northlight if she remembered too much.”
