Chapter 6 - THE ASHES IN THE URN

By sunrise, the wedding had become a criminal investigation.

News vans surrounded the hotel. Guests leaked video of Clara calling Adrian “Daddy.” Victoria’s face appeared on every local channel beside the words BRIDE MISSING AFTER CEREMONY COLLAPSES.

Adrian didn’t watch.

He sat beside Elise at St. Matthew’s Hospital while a doctor explained that she had been given a rotating mix of sedatives and mood stabilizers far beyond normal therapeutic need.

“She may have memory gaps for months,” the doctor said.

Elise looked at Adrian. “I remember enough.”

The DNA results arrived before noon.

Probability of parentage: 99.99 percent.

Clara was his daughter.

Mia was his daughter.

Adrian read the page twice, then pressed it to his chest.

Clara climbed onto the couch beside him.

“Does that mean I can stay?”

He pulled her close.

“It means nobody gets to take you away from me again.”

Elise turned her face toward the window, crying silently.

Ortiz arrived with another discovery.

The ashes Adrian had buried eighteen months earlier had been tested after the cemetery released the urn under warrant.

“They’re not human,” she said.

Adrian stared at her.

“Then what did I bury?”

“Cremated animal bone mixed with fireplace ash.”

Clara looked confused.

Adrian felt something inside him go cold.

Victoria had not simply lied.

She had built a funeral.

A death certificate.

A grieving process.

She had stood beside him at the cemetery while he believed his child was inside that urn.

Marcus entered with an envelope found in Charles Mercer’s office.

Inside was a draft amendment to the Vale Family Trust.

The amendment transferred controlling voting rights to Adrian’s spouse if he had no living biological children.

It was scheduled to take effect forty-eight hours after the wedding.

Adrian looked at Clara and Mia.

Victoria hadn’t hidden them because she hated children.

She had hidden them because they were worth billions.

Then Marcus placed one more document on the table.

Beneficiary: Victoria Mercer.
