Chapter 1 - The Girl With the Pink Backpack

Alba Martín walked into Altamar Technologies wearing a navy school uniform, white sneakers, and a pink backpack covered in tiny silver stars.
Ten minutes later, nobody in the executive conference room was smiling.
“Are you the interpreter?” Álvaro Medina asked.
Alba nodded once. “Put me to the test.”
A few people laughed under their breath. The meeting with Lianhua Systems was worth more than sixty million dollars. Their professional interpreter had collapsed with appendicitis that morning. The Chinese delegation was already in the building.
Alba read the Mandarin column silently, then began in English.
“Exclusive distribution rights remain temporary unless Altamar triggers a material compliance breach. If that happens, Lianhua receives a step-in option over specified technology licenses and regional assets.”
Clara Fuentes, Altamar’s legal director, stopped typing.
“That is not what the Spanish version says.”
“I know,” Alba replied.
Javier Salcedo, the CEO, leaned forward. “What does the Spanish version say?”
“Temporary marketing rights. No acquisition option.”
Alba turned two pages. “The same Mandarin phrase is here.”
Then three pages later.
Again.
The air changed.
Álvaro pulled the contract closer. “Could it be a translation mistake?”
“No.” Alba pointed to the characters with one finger. “Someone changed the legal effect.”
Clara’s smile disappeared.
“Who sent you here?”
“My mother.”
Javier went pale. “Her name.”
“Elena Martín.”
Nobody spoke.
Elena had been Altamar’s lead Mandarin translator until she resigned two years earlier without explanation.
Javier stood and locked the conference-room door.
“Did your mother tell you which page to check?”
Alba slowly opened her backpack and removed a folded sheet.
At the top, written in Elena’s hand, were four words and a number:
IF IT RETURNS, RUN.
CLAUSE 84.7.
Álvaro stared at the paper.
“How could your mother know the wording of a contract negotiated last month?”
Alba looked toward the glass wall.
May you like
A man from corporate security had just stopped outside.
And he was looking directly at her backpack.
