Chapter 5 - Elena's Last Day

Javier moved the meeting to a secure room on another floor.
This time, Mateo was not invited.
“That transmitter was installed inside my conference room,” Javier said. “Your department sweeps it every Monday.”
Mateo’s jaw tightened. “Then someone bypassed us.”
“Or someone used you.”
The security chief said nothing.
Álvaro plugged Elena’s flash drive into an isolated laptop.
There were only three files.
One was a video dated two years earlier.
Elena appeared on screen, exhausted, sitting in what looked like her apartment kitchen.
“If Alba is seeing this,” she said, “then Clause 84.7 came back.”
Alba stopped breathing.
Her mother looked younger in the recording, but frightened in a way Alba had never seen.
Elena explained that Altamar had negotiated a translation-services agreement with a small Shenzhen software company two years earlier. During review, she found unusual clauses hidden only in the Mandarin text.
Not bad translations.
Deliberate differences.
When she reported them, the clauses disappeared.
Then her access was revoked.
Then she was accused of mishandling confidential material.
“I resigned because they told me the next accusation would involve my daughter.”
Alba’s eyes filled.
Álvaro leaned closer to the screen.
Elena continued.
“The language was too specific to be one contract. It was a template. A trap designed to activate after a target company created a compliance failure.”
Javier whispered, “A takeover mechanism.”
The video ended with Elena naming one person she had trusted.
“Javier Salcedo helped me copy the first evidence.”
Everyone turned to the CEO.
Javier looked sick.
“You knew?” Álvaro demanded.
“I knew she found something. I did not know the scale.”
“You let everyone think she left because she made mistakes.”
“I tried to protect her.”
Alba stood.
“No. You protected the company.”
Javier had no answer.
The second file opened automatically.
It was a payroll export.
Payments totaling 1.8 million euros had moved through five consulting vendors since Elena’s resignation.
Every vendor approved by the same executive.
Clara Fuentes.
Then the third file opened.
A calendar entry appeared.
