Chapter 14 - The Man Who Didn't Die

Arturo was alive.

Older, thinner, with a white scar along his jaw, but alive.

Elena stepped toward the screen.

“You let us bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let Sofía mourn you.”

His face broke. “I know.”

“Why?”

“Because the people behind Mirror Language were going to kill the investigation and anyone attached to it.”

Javier snapped, “Who?”

Arturo looked at him.

“Your father started the financial architecture with Gabriel Fuentes. Isabel inherited it and expanded it. I helped them for four years.”

Silence.

There it was.

Not innocence.

Confession.

Arturo admitted he had built shell-company structures before understanding how they were being paired with manipulated contracts.

“When Elena found Clause 84.7’s ancestor, I realized what I had helped create.”

“So you ran,” Elena said.

“I copied records first.”

“You could have gone to police.”

“I tried. The officer I contacted warned Isabel within two hours.”

Arturo said his crash had been staged with help from a prosecutor now working with an international financial-crimes task force. His “death” allowed him to track the system’s offshore owners.

“North Cascade?” Álvaro asked.

“A honeypot structure. I let them think they controlled it.”

Isabel had moved money into it for years.

Arturo had been preserving the trail.

Then he looked at Alba.

“I’m sorry you were pulled into this.”

Alba crossed her arms. “Adults keep saying that after pulling me into things.”

For the first time, Arturo smiled.

“Fair.”

He gave them the final key needed to decrypt the B12 archive.

A sixteen-character phrase.

The countdown dropped below four hours.

Elena typed the key.

A hidden folder opened.

BOARD CONTINGENCY - ALBA MARTÍN.

Elena’s hands stopped.

“No.”

Inside were school schedules, photographs, and a drafted juvenile-data complaint accusing Elena of exploiting her daughter in illegal translation work.

They had prepared it two years ago.

The threat had been real.

Then Alba opened the newest file.

It contained her school address for tomorrow.
