Chapter 19 - The Board Vote

At 7:55 a.m., the Altamar board assembled under police observation.

Nobody had slept.

Isabel still held enough proxies to force the emergency vote.

She entered the room with two lawyers and no apology.

“This company needs stability,” she said.

Javier looked exhausted. “You mean silence.”

Then Álvaro placed three binders on the table.

One contained the clean Lianhua contract.

One contained the altered Mandarin version.

The third contained Mirror Language records from Archive C.

Mei Chen joined remotely and confirmed Lianhua had never approved the acquisition language.

Clara testified that Isabel had ordered parallel versions maintained.

Arturo appeared by secure video and admitted his own role in creating shell structures before turning witness.

Then Elena spoke.

Not as a former translator.

As the person who had found the first manipulated clause.

“I left because I was threatened through my daughter. I stayed gone because I believed silence kept her safe. It didn’t. It only kept this system alive.”

Isabel looked toward Alba, sitting behind the glass wall with a child advocate.

“This entire proceeding was triggered by an eleven-year-old.”

The vote never happened.

Before it could begin, financial-crimes officers served Isabel with a detention order tied to fraud, coercion, and conspiracy allegations.

Her lawyers stood.

So did she.

For the first time, she looked small.

As officers escorted her out, she stopped beside Javier.

“Father built Altamar from nothing.”

Javier shook his head.

“He built part of it on theft.”

The door closed behind her.

The board suspended the Lianhua transaction and authorized an independent forensic review of every foreign-language contract executed in the last twelve years.

Javier offered Elena her old job back.

She laughed once.

“No.”

Then Alba tugged her sleeve.

“There’s still something wrong.”

“What?”

“The note you gave me.”

Clause 84.7.

If it returns, run.

Elena looked confused.

“I wrote Clause 84.7.”

“Yes.” Alba unfolded the paper.

“But you didn’t write the words above it.”

IF IT RETURNS, RUN.

May you like

Elena stared at the handwriting.

And whispered, “Arturo did.”
