Chapter 20 - THE GIRL WHO NOTICED

The handwriting belonged to Marcus.

Clare looked at him.

"You added Ellie's name?"

Marcus shrugged. "She solved the part the rest of us missed."

Ellie was sitting on the floor with her latch toy.

She looked up.

"Did I win?"

Vincent laughed.

Dominic almost did too.

"You won nothing," Clare said. "And that's good."

The old Vale system began coming apart fast.

Black Harbor accounts were frozen.

Employees who had been threatened were interviewed outside the company.

Victims from the old routes were offered legal support instead of silence.

Dominic removed family-only voting control from the company charter.

Several board members resigned.

Arthur survived and later entered a guilty plea tied to Antonio Vale's death and the concealment of evidence.

Dominic visited once before sentencing.

"What happens now?" Arthur asked.

"We stop calling secrets protection."

Arthur nodded.

"Your mother would have liked that."

Dominic stood.

"Don't tell me what she would have liked."

Arthur accepted the correction.

At the estate, the rehabilitation room was rebuilt with glass walls and independent logs.

Dominic wore a new brace.

A new specialist adjusted every strap in front of him.

Ellie marched over when she finished.

Vincent folded his arms.

"Inspector's here."

Ellie checked the lower clasp.

Then nodded.

"This one is right."

Dominic took three steps without his cane.

Then five.

Pain remained.

So did the limp.

But neither felt like surrender anymore.

Clare watched from the doorway.

Marcus stood beside her, still learning how to be a brother. He had refused a board seat, refused a payout, and accepted only one thing from Dominic: access to every record that carried his name.

"No more sealed files," Marcus had said.

Dominic had agreed.

Clare still kept Caleb's note in her wallet. Not because she needed proof anymore, but because Ellie would one day be old enough to ask what her father had done when telling the truth became dangerous.

For once, Clare intended to answer everything.

Dominic stopped in front of Ellie.

Dominic stopped in front of Ellie.

"You caused a lot of trouble."

Clare's eyes narrowed.

Dominic held out his hand.

"Thank you."

Ellie shook it seriously.

Then Vincent entered with Caleb's original report.

On the final page, Caleb had written:

IF ELLIE EVER FINDS THIS, TELL HER HER DAD WASN'T AFRAID.

Clare's eyes filled.

Ellie couldn't read it yet.

So Clare knelt and read the words aloud.

Ellie hugged the latch toy to her chest.

Outside, Lake Michigan shone beneath a clear morning sky.

Dominic leaned his cane against the wall.

For years he had believed power meant seeing every threat before it reached him.

A four-year-old had taught him something better.

Then he took another step.
