Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR'S BROTHER

Mercer stared at the photograph.
"Nathan disappeared twelve years ago."
The picture was dated three years earlier.
Dominic looked at Clare. "Why didn't Caleb bring this to me?"
"He tried. Your office sent him away."
Vincent shook his head. "Not through me."
Clare wiped her face. "After Caleb died, two men came to my apartment asking what he'd told me. I had a three-year-old child. I stopped asking questions."
Dominic's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared of him during rehabilitation that morning.
Then a message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE SIGNED THE PAPERS.
Another followed.
ASK THE DOCTOR WHAT HE CHANGED.
Dominic turned to Mercer.
"What did you change?"
Mercer hesitated, then pulled a sealed laboratory envelope from his case.
"I reran your bloodwork privately."
"Why?"
"Because your chart didn't match what I was seeing."
Dominic read the report.
His nerve medication level was almost triple what Mercer had prescribed.
"You're overdosing me?"
"No. I've been lowering your dose. Somebody keeps replacing the pills."
Arthur swore softly.
Mercer continued. "Too much causes dizziness, weakness, confusion. Falls."
Exactly what the council had been told proved Dominic could no longer lead.
A shout came from the rehabilitation wing.
Security found Angela Pierce, one of Dominic's technicians, shaking beside a service elevator.
Dominic knelt near her.
"Who changed the brace?"
Angela looked terrified. "He made me."
"Who?"
"I never saw his face."
"Why obey him?"
"He knew what happened the night of your crash."
The elevator doors started closing.
Inside stood a man in Arthur's coat.
A black-stone ring flashed on his right hand.
May you like
Vincent lunged.
The doors shut before he reached them.
