Chapter 8 - THE LAKE ROAD

Vincent drove.

Dominic rode beside him.

Marcus sat in back.

Rain hammered the windshield.

They found Peter's sedan against a guardrail.

Angela was inside, wrists bound.

Peter was gone.

When Angela saw Marcus, she screamed.

"That's him!"

Dominic said, "Look again."

She stared at the crooked finger.

Then shook her head.

"The man I saw wore something that made his finger bend outward."

Marcus looked at Dominic.

Ellie had been right.

Angela pointed toward a drainage tunnel.

"Peter went that way."

Inside, Dominic heard voices.

Peter said, "You promised he'd sign."

Another man answered, "He would have if the child hadn't touched the brace."

Dominic knew the voice.

Gerald Pike.

The Vale family attorney.

Gerald stepped from the shadows holding a pistol.

On his hand was a copy of Marcus's ring.

A rigid silver brace forced his finger outward.

Vincent whispered, "Executive clearance."

Dominic understood.

The doors.

The server deletions.

The forged filings.

Gerald smiled.

"You always trusted paper, Dominic. That made this easy."

Peter suddenly struck him.

The gun dropped.

Vincent tackled Gerald into the shallow runoff.

Dominic grabbed the attorney's collar.

"Who ordered my crash?"

Gerald laughed.

"You still think I'm the top of this?"

Marcus moved closer.

Gerald looked at him.

"Tell Dominic who signed Black Harbor back into existence."

Marcus's face changed.

Dominic turned.

"Who?"

May you like

Marcus answered quietly.

"Your mother."
