Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO LIED

A judge denied the emergency attempt to seal the records, finding no reason to shield business documents from a lawful investigation. Elena obtained copies under a preservation order. The pages told the story of an entire profitable division built on contracts that never existed.

Alessandro read one payment schedule and went gray. "Some of these accounts passed through my office after I took over."

"Did you authorize them?" Elena asked.

"I signed monthly summaries. I never looked beneath them."

"That's exactly what the auditors will ask you."

He called the board and stepped back from day-to-day control while investigators examined the books.

A sealed recording from Isabella's cassette became available after experts authenticated the voice against family tapes. Mara listened beside Rios in a plain interview room.

Isabella spoke carefully, as though someone might enter at any moment.

"Carlo thinks he can buy us one more day," she said. "He wants Enzo gone, but he won't report his own brother. I told him that is how families become prisons."

There was a long pause, then a child's laugh in the background. Mara's laugh.

"My daughter deserves a world where her name doesn't frighten her," Isabella continued. "If Alessandro hears this, tell him I wasn't angry that he believed our father. I was angry nobody asked me."

Mara gripped the table until her fingers hurt. She had spent years imagining her mother died alone. Now she had proof Isabella had been thinking of her right until the end.

Alessandro listened separately. When he emerged, his expression looked stripped raw.

"I can't give you back what he took," he told Mara.

"No. You can't."

He nodded and accepted the answer.

That evening, a forensic analyst found an unexpected detail in the last piece of film: reflected in the window of the steel case was a hand holding a pistol. On that hand was a large square sapphire ring.

Only one of the men at the dock had worn that ring.

Vittorio Sterling.
