Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN IN EMERALD

Victoria agreed to meet investigators only after her father's company suspended her accounts. Mara sat behind the observation glass because Rios had invited her to hear the recorded statement.

"I didn't kill anybody," Victoria said. "I was just a kid when Isabella disappeared."

"Nobody said you fired the shot," Rios answered. "We are asking why you hid evidence and terrorized her daughter."

Victoria pressed her lips together. "My father said Mara was working for a rival family. He said she was dangerous."

"Did a dangerous woman make you spill wine on your own dress?"

Victoria looked away. "I wanted Alessandro to fire her. I thought if she was gone, the past would stay buried."

"And the invoice for destroyed records?"

"I signed it. Enzo told me those files were duplicates."

"Did you believe him?"

There was a long silence. "No."

Mara turned her chair toward the wall. For two years she had searched every face in the mansion for one person willing to treat her kindly. Victoria had known who she was and used her fear as a weapon.

When the interview ended, Victoria demanded a chance to speak to Mara. Rios asked. Mara declined.

"I don't owe her a conversation just because she's finally uncomfortable," she said.

An hour later Victoria changed her statement. She named the banker who arranged the fraudulent transfers, the attorney who prepared sham documents, and the man who collected the missing originals. She claimed Enzo kept the records in a safe beneath his downtown office.

Police obtained a warrant. Inside the safe they found financial records and one unregistered handgun, wrapped in a handkerchief bearing Vittorio's initials.

Rios called Mara that evening. "There is enough to question the men separately. But listen carefully: a gun in a safe is not proof of murder. We still need the connection."

At that moment, a process server rang the doorbell.

He delivered a lawsuit naming Alessandro as the organizer of Isabella's killing.
