Chapter 9 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Mara slept at a secure apartment rented in her own name. She insisted on a lock she controlled and staff she could dismiss. Alessandro stopped calling it protection when she asked him to call it privacy.
The next morning Elena arrived with records from Cook County. Isabella's marriage to Daniel Vale was valid. A birth certificate identified their daughter as Mara Isabella Vale. An amended estate document, signed before the fire, established a trust for the child and named Alessandro as alternate guardian if both parents died.
Alessandro stared at his own signature. "I never signed this."
"You did," Celia said quietly from the doorway. "At the hospital after Mara was born. You held her while Isabella signed."
A memory returned: a tiny hand gripping his finger, a tired young mother laughing, and the promise he made that nobody would ever leave the baby alone.
"I forgot," he whispered.
"You were told to forget," Celia said. "There is a difference, but it doesn't erase what happened next."
The trust owned a minority stake in several properties Enzo had quietly folded into shell corporations.
Mara wasn't interested in becoming an heiress. She wanted her mother's name cleared and the employees paid.
"The money belongs to whoever it was stolen from," she said. "Start there."
Elena explained they would need a court, an independent accounting, and evidence that the amended documents were authentic. Alessandro agreed to submit his own accounts for review.
A call came from Rios. The cassette had been restored enough to hear the first thirty seconds.

Isabella's voice filled the line, unsteady but unmistakable.
"If anything happens to me, ask Alessandro what he carried out of Pier Nine on September seventeenth. He'll say he doesn't remember. Make him remember."
