Chapter 1 - The Sound Before the Fall

The first glass moved before anyone heard the tower crack.
Eight tiers of hand-cut crystal rose above the terrace, catching the evening lights from the Vance estate and throwing them across the marble like tiny stars. Beneath the display, five-year-old Noah Vance rolled a wooden vintage car along the floor, humming to himself. A faint metallic vibration traveled through the pedestal.
Clink.
One glass shifted at the third tier. Elena Ruiz saw it from the service doors. She had worked enough banquets to know the difference between a breeze and a structure losing its balance. Her eyes snapped to the base. A silver brace hung at the wrong angle.
"Noah! Move!"
He looked up, startled. Elena crossed the terrace in three hard strides, scooped him under the arms, and threw herself sideways behind a stone bench. The tower folded like a breaking wave. Crystal exploded across the marble. Guests screamed and ducked beneath tables as hundreds of glasses crashed into a glittering avalanche.
A shard cut Elena's forearm. Another struck the bench where Noah's head had been a second earlier. He clung to her vest, too shocked to cry.
"You're safe," she said, though blood was already running to her wrist. "Look at me, Noah. You're safe."
His small face had gone pale. He stared past her shoulder at the wreckage, then at a man in a black dinner jacket backing toward the French doors.
"Uncle Adrian pushed it," Noah whispered.
Elena tightened her hold. "What did you say?"
"He pushed the shiny thing with his shoe." Noah pointed at the base. "He told me it was a game."
Before Elena could ask another question, billionaire Julian Vance rushed across the terrace and dropped to his knees beside his son. His gaze moved from Noah to Elena's bleeding arm, then to the shattered tower.
"Who did this?" he demanded.
May you like
Noah pointed again, his little finger trembling.
But Adrian Vance had already disappeared inside the house.
