Chapter 15 - The Cost of Being Right

Clearing Elena's name did not erase the weeks she had spent watching strangers discuss her as if she were a problem to be managed. A local paper published a correction, but the original headline had already been shared thousands of times. Some people apologized. Others said the billionaire had simply protected his favorite employee.

Elena refused interviews that would turn her life or Noah's fear into entertainment. She agreed to meet the board only to discuss safety, not to defend herself again.

Several directors wanted to call it a one-time failure. The display company had insurance, Adrian was arrested, and the public wanted a neat ending.

Elena stood before them in a plain black suit and described what she had seen: the unstable base, the missing pin, the open service corridor, and the way staff had been discouraged from questioning last-minute changes.

"If I had waited for a manager to answer my call, Noah might not have survived," she said. "Give staff authority to stop an unsafe event, train them, and protect them when they speak up."

One director asked whether that would slow down operations and increase costs.

"Yes," Elena replied. "Safety costs money. So does pretending danger will never happen."

The room went quiet. Julian did not speak for her. He let the board hear her on her own terms.

The board approved a new safety protocol, independent inspection of large displays, and a protected reporting channel for staff. It also authorized a review of every foundation vendor and a public accounting of the funds diverted through Northline.

After the meeting, Julian offered Elena her job back with a raise. She thanked him but shook her head.

"I don't want to return to the same role under the same rules. I have event operations experience, and I want the chance to build the safety program properly. If you offer me a position, it needs real authority, training budget, and a direct line to the board."

Julian considered the request, then held out his hand.

"That's exactly what I'm offering. Director of Event Safety and Staff Operations, subject to the board's approval and a proper contract."

Elena shook his hand, but she did not smile yet.

"Then put it in writing," she said.

For the first time, Julian laughed. "I will.
