Chapter 19 - The Next Celebration

The next Vance Foundation celebration took place six months later, not on the terrace but in a community hall beside the children's center. There were no towering crystal displays. The centerpiece was a low arrangement of paper lanterns made by the children who used the center, each one marked with a name or a wish.
Elena checked exits, cables, table spacing, and radios against the posted safety plan. When a delivery arrived late, she changed the schedule rather than rushing the setup.
Julian found her near the stage. "You built something better than what we had before," he said.
"The staff built it," she replied. "I just made sure they could tell us when something was wrong."
Maya arrived with Noah, who carried his wooden car in one hand and Bunny, his small stuffed fox, in the other. He had stopped bringing the car everywhere, but he liked to keep it close on big days.
He spotted Elena and ran toward her, slowing when he reached the marked staff area.
"Can I come in?" he asked.
"Of course. Watch the cable by your shoe."
He stepped over it and held up a drawing of the tower falling, Elena pulling him away, and people behind a barrier. Above them he had written: PEOPLE WHO HELP.
Elena looked at him. "That's a good drawing, Noah."
"Daddy says you helped everybody, because now people can stop things before they fall."
She crouched to his height. "I helped you that night. The rest of the work is something all of us have to do."
He considered that, then hugged her around the neck. She held him for a moment and let him go when he was ready.
During the event, Julian announced that an independent audit was complete and the foundation had begun recovering the stolen funds. He spoke about accountability, the staff who raised concerns, and the families who depended on the center.
At the end, he invited the workers to eat before the donors. It was a small change, but it had been written into the new event policy after staff said they were always the last to sit down.
Noah pulled out a chair beside Elena.

"This seat is for you," he said.
Across the table, Julian met her eyes and waited for her answer.
