Chapter 18 - The Old Attorney

The attorney was Charles Vane, the man who had handled Valentina’s father’s estate.

He had retired three years earlier.

By noon, police were searching his Cape Cod home.

They found cash, forged seals, duplicate trust documents, and a second version of Valentina’s father’s will.

Rachel laid both wills side by side.

The genuine will left Blackthorn entirely to Valentina.

The forged version created a joint family trust naming Gloria as co-trustee.

“Why didn’t they use this years ago?” Valentina asked.

“Because your father registered the genuine will directly with the probate court before he died. Vane couldn’t replace it without triggering a comparison.”

“So they waited for the restriction to expire.”

Rachel nodded.

“They built a second route.”

Nathan, still hospitalized, joined by video call.

“Was my mother working with Vane before Valentina and I married?”

Rachel looked at the dates.

“Yes.”

Valentina felt a chill.

“How long before?”

“Almost a year.”

Nathan went silent.

Their courtship had lasted ten months.

Valentina slowly understood.

“You didn’t introduce me to your family by accident.”

Nathan looked horrified. “Val, no.”

Rachel interrupted. “There’s a memo from Vane.”

She read it aloud.

‘Marriage remains the cleanest access point. Nathan is unaware of asset strategy.’

Nathan covered his face.

Gloria had not merely exploited the marriage.

She had encouraged it because Valentina owned Blackthorn.

Valentina thought of every family dinner Gloria had hosted, every compliment, every push toward a bigger wedding, a bigger home, joint accounts.

Then Rachel turned the page.

“There’s another note.”

“What?”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“It says, ‘If marriage fails, custody is leverage.’”

Valentina looked toward Elliot playing with crayons across the room.

Gloria had been planning to use him before he was even born.
