Chapter 8 - The Greenhouse

The old greenhouse stood at the far edge of Blackthorn’s property, beyond the formal gardens and the stone wall.
Valentina walked toward it carrying the deed in a leather folder.
Marco and two guards shadowed her from the trees despite Gloria’s demand.
Nathan insisted on coming.
“You stay behind me,” Valentina told him.
He gave a bitter laugh. “You think I’m the danger?”
“I don’t know what you are yet.”
Inside the greenhouse, Gloria sat beside Elliot on an old bench.
Elliot ran to Valentina the second he saw her.
“Mom!”
She caught him and dropped to her knees.
“Did she hurt you?”
He shook his head.
Gloria stood. “Give me the deed.”
Valentina rose slowly, keeping Elliot behind her.
“Why?”
“Because you were never supposed to keep Blackthorn.”
Nathan stepped through the doorway.
“Mom, stop.”
Gloria’s face twisted. “You stop. I spent thirty years making sure this family had a future, and you married a woman who inherited everything by accident.”
“It wasn’t an accident,” Valentina said.
Gloria laughed. “Your father was dying and sentimental.”
Valentina tightened one arm around Elliot. “My father spent forty years restoring this place. He knew exactly what he was doing.”
“He left an estate worth millions to a daughter who thinks money is about feelings.”
“No. He left it to someone who didn’t treat people like entries in a ledger.”
Gloria’s mouth thinned. “You have no idea what it takes to keep a family powerful.”
Valentina looked around the cracked greenhouse glass, the dead vines, the frightened child standing behind her. “If this is your idea of power, it looks a lot like rot.”
Nathan flinched at that. Gloria did not.
“So you forged me out.”
“I corrected his mistake.”
Nathan stared at her. “You used Elliot’s trust.”
“I protected Serena.”
“From what?”
Gloria’s answer came instantly.
“From you.”
Nathan went still.
Valentina saw it again: the same flash of fear from the ballroom.
Gloria pointed at him.
“Ask your husband where the eight million dollars went before I ever touched a signature.”
Nathan’s face collapsed.
Valentina turned toward him.
“What eight million dollars?”
He said nothing.
May you like
Gloria smiled.
For the first time that night, Valentina realized the theft had started long before the wedding.
