Chapter 4 - The Second Signature

Valentina locked the ballroom office and spread every document across the desk.
Marco stood beside the door while her attorney, Rachel Kim, joined by video call.
“Photograph everything before anyone touches it,” Rachel said.
Valentina did.
Nathan paced behind her. “This is a misunderstanding.”
“Then stop saying that and tell me what happened.”
He rubbed both hands over his face. “Serena wanted security. Mom thought giving her a small share would make sense.”
“Fifty percent is not small.”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When? After the closing?”
His silence landed like a confession.
Rachel studied the photographs Valentina sent.
“Valentina, page nine.”
Valentina flipped to it.
A board consent authorized a mortgage against Blackthorn Estate for eight million dollars.
Her signature appeared there too.
So did Nathan’s.
She stared at him.
“What is this?”
Nathan stopped pacing.
“I don’t know.”
“You signed it.”
“I signed a packet six weeks ago. Mom said it was insurance paperwork for the event.”
Valentina laughed once, without humor.
“You signed documents you didn’t read against my property?”
Nathan’s face tightened. “I trusted my family.”
“So did I.”
Rachel’s voice cut through the silence.
“There’s more. The lender listed here is Caldwell Heritage Capital.”
Valentina had never heard of it.
Marco had.
He turned from the door. “That company was formed three months ago.”
“By who?” Valentina asked.
Marco looked at Nathan.
“Gloria Caldwell.”
Nathan sat down slowly.
Then Rachel said, “Valentina, there’s a guarantor attached to the loan.”
“Who?”
May you like
Rachel hesitated.
“Your son.”
