Chapter 20 - Important Guests

Six months later, Blackthorn Estate reopened after a long restoration.
Valentina had turned the west wing into a small foundation office focused on legal aid for families facing financial abuse and coercive control.
Serena volunteered twice a week. The first month, Valentina barely spoke to her outside scheduled meetings. Serena never complained. She organized case files, answered phones, and spent hours helping frightened women fill out forms without once asking to be forgiven. One afternoon Elliot offered her half a cookie. Valentina watched Serena blink back tears before taking it.
Trust had not returned completely, but honesty had finally started doing the work fear never could.
Nathan lived in his own apartment.
He saw Elliot regularly, attended therapy, and cooperated with prosecutors in every case connected to Gloria and Charles Vane.
Valentina had not put her wedding ring back on.
Maybe she never would.
One Saturday afternoon, Blackthorn hosted a children’s fundraiser.
Tables filled the ballroom where Gloria had slapped Elliot.
This time the room was covered in paper stars, balloons, and trays of cupcakes.
Elliot stood beside the dessert table wearing a little navy jacket.
A nervous boy about his age reached for a cupcake, then pulled his hand back.
“Are those only for important guests?” he asked.
Elliot looked at Valentina.
She smiled.
He picked up two cupcakes and handed one to the boy.
“Everybody here is important.”
Across the room, Nathan heard him.
His eyes lowered for a moment.
Then he smiled too.
Later, as the last guests left, Elliot found the old forged transfer framed behind glass in Valentina’s office.
Under it was a small brass plaque:
THE PAPER THAT ALMOST STOLE A HOME.
Beside it hung the genuine deed.
Elliot pointed at both.
“Which one matters more?”
Valentina knelt beside him.
“The real one.”
“Because it has your name?”
She shook her head.
“Because the truth doesn’t become less true just because somebody writes a better lie.”
Elliot thought about that.
Then he took her hand.
Downstairs, the ballroom lights glowed warm against the marble.
The same room where a slap had exposed a family.
The same room they had tried to steal.
Now it belonged to Valentina without question.
May you like
But more important, it felt like Elliot’s home again.
And this time, nobody needed permission to stay.
