Chapter 10 - The Page That Was Missing

Back at the Vale mansion, Evelyn was examined by an independent physician. The doctor documented her condition and recommended a full review of the medication history. He made no claim about who was responsible, but he confirmed that the abrupt changes in her care needed investigation.

Evelyn rested in her own room while Adrian, Naomi, and Marisol went through the trust documents. The amendment Celeste had shown them was only a copy. The original had to be filed with the trust administrator and witnessed according to the trust’s rules.

“The document says Evelyn voluntarily gave Celeste temporary control if two physicians found her incapable of managing her affairs,” Marisol explained. “But the second assessment is missing.”

They searched the estate’s office and found a filing box with a gap where a document should have been. The inventory list described it as a capacity assessment completed by Dr. Miriam Shaw, a specialist who had treated Evelyn after her husband died.

Marisol called Shaw’s office. The doctor confirmed that she had evaluated Evelyn a year earlier and found her fully capable of making her own decisions. She had never signed a more recent assessment.

Adrian sank into his chair. “Celeste forged the paperwork.”

Naomi remembered the blue stain on Halden’s cuff and the document in Celeste’s pocket. She asked whether the trust office kept digital records of submitted paperwork.

A clause near the end of the deed had been highlighted in yellow. It said that if a proposed trustee was found to have knowingly submitted false documents, the appointment would be void and the trust would be placed under independent court supervision.

Inside was a photograph of Celeste standing beside a man Naomi had never seen.
